The Nine Tails: Brand, and separation

Branding emerged to solve the anonymity of mass production. It also built an industry that fragmented itself from the start.

Branding emerged to solve the anonymity of mass production. It also built an industry that fragmented itself from the start. By the mid-twentieth century, advertising, PR, government affairs, and investor relations operated as separate disciplines, each with its own vocabulary, its own metrics, and its own claim to be the "strategic" function the others served.

The damage was not dramatic. It was invisible. Marketing advanced promises operations could not keep. PR managed crises communications had created. Government affairs took positions brand had never seen. Each function performed well against its own numbers while the whole quietly lost coherence.

Read a company's advertising next to its regulatory filings, its employee reviews next to its press releases. Where they contradict, no single department can see it, because no single department is responsible for the whole.

The whole was never anyone's job. That is the structural gap Entual was built to close.
